Three Congregations Join For Menorah Lighting Ceremony
For the first time, three Rockaway synagogues joined on Friday, December 15 to celebrate the lighting of the Chanukah Menorah at Beach 116 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Rabbi Allan Blaine of Temple Beth-El, Rabbi Marjorie Slome of West End Temple and Rabbi Boaz Tomsky of Congregation Ohab Zedek joined forces for a celebration of the festival of lights that included prayers, songs and Chanukah Gelt for the kids. Cantor Wolk of Beth-El led the singing. The festival of Chanukah celebrates the rededication of the temple by the Maccabees, who found in the temple only enough oil to light the lamps for one night. Tradition says, however that the oil burned for eight nights, hence the eight candles on the menorah.
