SFDS Christmas Holiday Basketball Tournament Begins

The highlight game of the week was the Girls Pee Wee A who beat St. Stans 11-9 on Courtney Blum’s game winning basket with one second remaining. With the score tied, St. Stan’s shot and St. Francis rebounded and went the length of the court as Blum scored the winner. Mary Ellen Woods tallied 7 in the win and Erin Klein while Madison Efron excelled on defense. The Pee Wee B’s beat St. Thomas More before suffering their first loss against St. Margaret. Serena Yanello and Jen Tipaldo led the scoring against St. Thomas as Taylor Veigh and Renee Simos also shined.

A glaring size differential proved too difficult to overcome against St. Margaret. Kayla Kilgallen and Jen Tipaldo led the way but the lack of inside scoring proved decisive. The Novice girls continued their winning ways against our Lady of Grace led by Shannon Twomey, Kristie Carey, and Aimee McManus. The Bantams also cruised against St. Margaret as Lynn Rayder scored 8 and Marissa Scotto 6. Erin Blum, Lisa Pulkoski, and Regina Paskoff added 4 each.

The Boys Subnovice A’s traveled to Nativity with Matt LaSorsa, Ethan Ruiz, and Mark Butigian leading the scoring. The Subnovice B’s hosted OLPH and had a great game with James McElhatton scoring 7 and Ryan Moran and Frank McVeigh 6 each. Noah Nicholson completed the scoring. On Sunday the teams faced off against each other in a spirited contest that will prepare them both for the SFDS Christmas Tournament. Ryan Moran, Brian Ostrander, Joe Gallo, and Frank McVeigh scored for the B’s while John Boyle, Sean Meier, and James Corrigan scored for the A’s.

The Pee Wee A’s beat Gate of Heaven with the shot blocking defense of Charles Gavigan providing the key. Tommy Morgan and Tommy Lynch hustled on both ends while Chris Ray and James Marotta fueled the offense. The Pee Wee B’s continue to have the most exciting contests and pulled away from St. Adalbert in the final 2 minutes for a 29-23 win. Anthony Scotto, John Whelan, Bard Featherston, and Jordan Asbury led the way. The Novice squad worked its way out of a deep hole but fell short 29-27 against St. Stan.

The Bantams went on a 3rd quarter blitz to turn a one point halftime lead into a 44-27 win over Gate of Heaven. Jack Hurley led with 15 points. Brendan Margolies anchored the defense and Charlie Marquardt controlled the boards. The Rookies bat OLPH while the Intermediates split with a win over St. Stan and a loss at OLPH.

The Christmas Tournament begins today, Saturday, with 8 games starting at 10:00 AM. Sunday’s schedule begins at 1:00 with 7 games on tap. Games continue through the week at 6, 7, and 8:15 PM. 36 teams from Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island are entered in the six divisions.

The tournament continues through 12/30 and will feature performances by the SFDS Cheerleaders, a 50/50 raffle and other surprises in addition to the great games of the premier CYO holiday tournament in the diocese. Tournament Directors Marty and Keith Andresen invite you once again to come and enjoy.
