A new $250,000 state of the art mammography suite was unveiled to Rockaway residents at a ceremony at Peninsula Hospital Center this week.

Robert Levine, the hospital’s president and CEO spoke about the new suite.

“The hospital is in a period of advancement with these two outstanding mammography units acquired and installed,” said Levine at Wednesday’s ceremony.

Administrative director James Martinez, along with the co-directors of the department of imaging – Doctors Richard Steinberg and Stanley Sprecher – oversee the mammography suite with a staff that includes four mammography technicians.

While the hospital did receive some government grants, board member Nancy Vardakis said money is still being raised to assist in funding the makeover of the mammography suite.

“I received a check today from a man in memory of his mother, who had breast cancer,” said Vardakis.

Those wishing to make an appointment for a mammogram can call the hospital at 718-734-2610.
