Grocery Hold Up No Joke For Employees
A gun-toting quartet of bandana-bound stickup men took more than $8,000 from a Rockaway Park grocery store on Monday evening, leaving with the money and more than $500 worth of phone cards, police say.
The four youths, aged 15 to 25, entered the Rockaway Grocery and Deli at 112-32 Rockaway Beach Boulevard at about 9:24 p.m. on Monday.
The four had bandanas wrapped around their faces and one carried what was described to police as a black revolver. The man with the gun told the workers in the store, “This is a stick up. I’m not joking.”
His accomplices went behind the counter, taking the money from the cash register and the phone cards from a rack where they were displayed.
In addition, one of the men forced a 15-year-old boy who was in the store to turn over $30 and a bankcard.
Police quickly cordoned off the area, searching for the four youths. A police helicopter from the Aviation Unit searched the rooftops in the area and along the beachfront.
Detectives from the 100 Precinct Squad are investigating. Sources told The Wave that a tape from a videotape camera mounted in the grocery is being reviewed for clues to the robbery.
