The Inner Voice

Commentary by Marilyn Gelfand

We must always remember that nothing stays the same. Life changes whether we like it or not. Now as we celebrate holidays, it is a good awareness to keep in mind. Perhaps you celebrated differently in your childhood, with different people, and now you may not be sure what to expect if you are not the host. Life may have dealt cruel blows to you or the people you care about. You may choose to deal with the holidays in a nontraditional way. Or if you yourself get the urge to do things differently this year, well why not follow your urges? It is fun to do what you really want to do rather than be locked into past ways that may have no more meaning for you or have just become stale.

The idea is to think of change not as something bad, but as a positive force that keeps life interesting. It is fun to be really involved with your own plans and not just go through the motions. Many of us may be feeling sad because of missed individuals who were important to us, but even with the sadness, we can still create a joyful moment or have the recognition that life is bittersweet. It makes no sense to torment oneself over the fact that life is not like it was rather than try to find a good place to put yourself. Life will change again bringing more surprises. As best as possible, it is up to us to create a place for ourselves where we can feel comfortable.
