Rockaway Stars Fuel Xaverian JV To CHSFL Title
Xaverian High School's JV Football team won its second straight CHSFL AA Championship by defeating St. Francis Prep , 41-21 at Kings Bay Field in Brooklyn on November 18.
The power house Xaverian team ran a reverse on the opening kick off that went all the way in for a touchdown, but was called back due to a penalty. That type of wide open offense seemed too much for St. Francis Prep , as the Clippers struck from the air and ground. QB Najee Tyler led the high powered offense all season, and this game was no different.
Nick Mastros scored two touchdowns on pass plays, the first one for 55 yds. Gerald Mistretta also had a fine day running and receiving for the Clippers and Jaquan Bethune ran masterfully through the huge holes the offensive line was creating, and also scored 2 touchdowns. The defense never really got tested as Oday Aboushi, Gerald Mistretta, Joe Castiglione, and Jesse Paquaga lead a smothering attack against the pass or run.
Pete Cecorra lead the special teams with some fantastic punt/kick off returns as he has all year, but the real strength came from watching this remarkably close knit group of young men, play together as a football team that would not be denied this championship.
This season of excellence was a culmination of hard work by the players, and one of the best JV coaching staffs in high school football, as Head Coach Tony Spina, Pete Ficorelli, Tom Burke, Eric Tarrats taught these players how to win with class and dignity.
The Xaverian Varsity Football team, led by Head Coach Dom Laurendi, also won the CHSFL AA Championship by defeating Fordham Prep, 49-28 @ Fordham University in the Bronx. Congratulations X-Men!
