Four local schools recently attended a performance of the opera "Hansel and Gretel" at the State Theater at Lincoln Center, through their participation in the New York City Opera Education Program at Lincoln Center.

The schools, sponsored by the Rockaway Music & Arts Council, participated in the program, which includes teacher training, in-school workshops for the children and help in preparing a final original production in their schools. Students from PS 215, PS 47, PS 183 and PS 114 enjoyed the exciting experience of attending the opera, and were impressed with the new production. The fairytale is reworked and takes place in New York City at the turn of the century where Central Park replaces the woods. Students enjoyed the full orchestra and score, as well as the staging.

Upon leaving the theater, many children were singing the arias, which they became familiar with during their pre-studies at their schools.

The Rockaway Music & Arts Council plans to sponsor additional schools for the Lincoln Center program for the upcoming 2007-2008 school year.
