PHC Pushes 'No Smoking' Campaign
Peninsula Hospital Center's Director of Medicine, Martin A. Grossman, MD began a series of community-based lectures on smoking cessation at the Zikhron Aryeh Yeshiva High School of Agudat Yisrael of Bayswater. Seventy students attended the lecture and according to Grossman, the reception from the students was encouraging. "Quite a few students came up to me after the presentation and asked pertinent questions," commented Grossman. "It is my hope that many of the students who heard the lecture will quit or in the best case scenario, never start smoking." Realizing that smoking is often a social occasion, Rabbi Sternberg, a teacher in the Yeshiva, has suggested that although he cannot control what the students do after school hours, during the controlled environment of school, students will not be allowed to smoke in groups during breaks. After hearing this suggestion, Grossman wholeheartedly endorsed the suggestion saying, "Everything that can be done should be done to discourage smoking. The data about the damage to a person's overall health is indisputable."
