The Lady Hibernians of Queens County invite all sixth through twelfth grade students who live or attend school in Queens to participate in their annual Irish History Writing Contest.
The topics for the contest are "What were the contributions of Irish inventors for the U.S. economy?" (Grades 6-8), between 750 and 1,000 words, and "What was the Irish immigration experience in America?" (Grades 9-12), between 750 and 1,500 words. Papers should be typed, with 12-point typeface, or handwritten and double-spaced on one side of a page. An introduction, an opinion or interpretation of the topic, footnotes (where applicable), a conclusion and bibliography should also be included.
A separate cover sheet must accompany each entry. The cover sheet must contain:
+ The topic in the center of the sheet.
+ Name, home address and age in the lower left-hand corner.
+ School name and address, grade level and the number of words of the entry (excluding cover sheet, introduction, footnotes and bibliography) in the lower right-hand corner.
Monetary prizes will be awarded for the winners in each topic on the county, state and national level.
Entries must be sent to your school's principal no later than January 5, 2007. The school will then contact the Lady Hibernians for address information to send in entries. For more information, contact Joan Kearney at firstname.lastname@example.org.
