The kidsmART after-school program is thriving in T-149 and we are pleased to announce that the kidsmART family has embarked upon a new project, "The Giving Tree." Based on the principles of Shel Silverstein's wonderful children's book of the same title, kidsmART has created a giving tree in T-149. The tree, created via the generosity of kidsmART parent, Matt Kempner, is a beautiful arrangement of wintry, white branches. This tree is adorned with leaves. Each leaf has the holiday gift wish of a child in the Rockaway community who suffers from a great need ranging from poverty, absence of parents, to living in a violent, unsafe environment and disabilities.

In partnership with PS 256 (Belle Harbor) and PS 253 (Far Rockaway) the kidsmART family is endeavoring to fulfill the wishes of these 131 children. In the true spirit of the holidays and following the kidsmART principles, the parents of the kidsmART kids have enthusiastically stepped up to the plate and gladly taken leaves from the tree. In addition and as always, the Graybeards readily supported kidsmART's efforts and gave a generous donation toward the project. And kidsmART staff members have taken leaves as well. RAA and kidsmART thank you all. We invite all RAA members and members of the community to participate in "The Giving Tree." If you would like more information regarding this project, please call the RAA office at 718-474-0861.

On November 16 Marina Callaghan was one of the honorees at the annual dinner of the Good Government Regular Democratic Club at El Caribe in Brooklyn. Callaghan is the Education Program Coordinator of the Rockaway Artists Alliance and Co-Director of camp kidsmART. She was given the Stephen Lefkowitz Memorial Award for her Community Service and Leadership. At the ceremony, she graciously thanked all those presently involved in the program, particularly RAA Education Program Director Christine Mullally.

Approximately forty-five RAA members attended the dinner, in support and appreciation of the invaluable contribution Callaghan makes to the children of our community.

The Good Government Club is to be thanked for publicly recognizing this contribution. In addition, each honoree was awarded a beautiful citation by Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, who was in attendance.

Callaghan thanks the Assemblywoman for this meaningful gesture. She also wishes to express how much she appreciated the presence of her family, friends and colleagues at the event.

RAA expresses its good wishes to those who suffered injury in the accident involving the Good Government Club bus carrying passengers to Atlantic City.

At the time of this writing details are incomplete.

However, we send our deepest regrets to the family and friends of the bus driver who lost his life.
