SFDS Basketball Action Heats On The Hardwood

Soccer playoffs are on the main stage right now but basketball has been busy as well. The Girls Pee Wee A's beat St. Margaret and Gate of Heaven before losing a tough one against St. Mary Winfield this past weekend. Scoring leaders have been Mary Ellen Woods, Erin Klein and Kerri Rose Brennan. Lisa Pellegrini, Julia Carey, Erika Sorensen, Courtney Blum, Meredith Connelly, Cliona Smith, Kayla Rayder, and Madison Efron have all contributed with passing, defense and rebounding.

The Pee Wee B's have cruised to easy wins over Our Lady of Hope and most recently Ressurection/ Ascension. Kayla Kilgallen and Emma Michaels keyed the win over Hope, while Jenna Tipaldo, Renee Simos, Taylor Veigh, and Emma Knox led the win over R/A. The Novice girls also beat R/A led by Daisy Trusttum and Therese Boyle. The Bantams had an easy win over St. Margaret before pulling out a double overtime thriller 25-22 against Our Lady of Grace. Taylor Butigian scored 10 against St. Margaret and 8 in the OLG game. Lynn Rayder paced the OLG win with 9 points. Marissa Scotto, Erin Blum, Lisa Pulkoski, and Jen O'Hara added more scoring while Kristin Henschel and Jessica Boland added excellent defensive hustle and passing.

The Intermediates have had a strange few weeks with cancellations on successive days one weekend, an easy win over St. Mary Winfield and then a tough loss to Sacred Heart; all while dealing with multiple injuries. Scoring has come from Rebecca Moers, Taylor Conroy, Annette Scotto, Kathryn Foris, and Kristin Ferrandino. Vanessa Ramos and Danielle Farragher have excelled on defense. Hopefully Allison McGovern will recover and return to action in the not too distant future. The Rookies are rolling along with a strong team effort.

The boys' season has gotten untracked slowly due to scheduling problems. The highlight was an opening weekend Bantam game against St. Helen in a rematch of last year's Diocesan Championship. Defense ruled the day with St. Francis holding St. Helen scoreless in the first half. Patrick Goldberg led a parade of 9 players who scored for SFDS in a 19-13 win. Defense was also the catalyst this weekend in a win over St. Thomas More. Ryan Kilgallen's 6 points topped the offense.

The Intermediates prepped for their season with strong play in the Christ the King and St. Edmund tournaments. In their home opener, it took some time to shake the butterflies before they pulled away from St. Stans. Stephen Kelly, James Mercer and Joe Wolfer stood out with their overall play. The Subnovice A's played St. Thomas More and St. Helen on successive weekends. Alex Goldberg and John Boyle were the leading scorers aided by Matt LaSorsa, James Corrigan, Mark Butigian, and Sean Meier.

The Subnovice B's looked great in games with Our Lady of Grace and Nativity. John O'Connor, Christian Apice, Ryan Moran, James McElhatton, and Joe Gallo led the way. The Pee Wee A's won their only game, against Our Lady of Grace, as Charles Gavigan, Jimmy Howard, Max Frankel, and Kevin McDonagh paced the team. We are still waiting on schedules for this weekend's games so remember to check your email!
