St. Francis Runners Sweep Sectional Championships

On Sunday, November 5th, the SFDS Cross-Country team competed at Alley Pond Park in the Sectional Championships with outstanding results. Out of eight age and gender divisions, SFDS won five championships. In the Sectional Championships, the ten competing parishes were divided into two sections, Black and Yellow. Competing in the Yellow section, SFDS's Senior boys (ages 13 and 14), Junior girls (ages 11 and 12), Bantam girls and boys (ages 9 and 10) and Novice boys (ages 8 and under) were first place gold medal winners. Second place silver medals were won by the Junior boys and the Novice girls teams.

To determine the score of a cross-country race, the places of the top three finishers from each team in a race are added, the team with the lowest total is champion; the next lowest score is second, etc. Individual medals were also awarded to the top 15 runners from each section in each race. The SFDS runners focused on running strong and passing as many competitors as they could on their way to the finish line. Thirty-seven St. Francis runners won individual medals.

The Senior boys championship team was led by Steve Pulkoski (1st, 6:29), Conor Davan (3rd, 6:35), James Mercer (5th, 6:51), Kilby Featherston (6th, 6:57), and James Goldberg (7th, 7:01) in their 1.1 mile race.

The Junior girls placed 5 runners in the first 7 places to win the championship of their mile race. Erin Rose Nuszer (1st, 5:47), Lisa Pulkoski (3rd, 5:52), Anna Pastina (5th, 6:26), Patricia Buell (6th, 6:28), Katy Windels (7th, 6:33) and Emma Lane (14th) all won individual medals. The Junior boys, led by Patrick Goldberg (1st, 5:18), Billy Dunn (4th, 5:43), James Lopez (10th, 6:20), Tommy Mercer (13th, 6:32) and Charlie Wanderer (15th, 6:44), placed second, narrowly missing the championship by 4 points.

The Bantam boys, running 2/3 of a mile, scored a perfect score with Sean Rivera (1st, 4:12), Bard Featherston (2nd, 4:21), Michael Castellano (3rd, 4:30). Liam Lachner (4th, 4:33), Chris Cole (8th, 4:48), John Glynn (11th, 4:55), Denis Murtagh (12th, 5:00) and Yarden Flatow (16th, 5:36) rounded out the championship team. The Bantam girls won their championship behind the efforts of Cassie Moriarty (2nd, 5:08), Celeste Lynch (3rd, 5:18) and Serena Yannello (4th, 5:18).

The Novice boys, running 1/2 a mile, also with a perfect score to win their championship, were led by Alex Goldberg (1st, 3:22), Thomas Glynn (2nd, 3:37), and John O'Connor (3rd, 3:45). Gregory Henschel (7th, 3:58), James Lunny (10th, 4:08), Joseph O'Connor (11th, 4:12), Anthony Caiazzo (12th, 4:13) and Aidan Donahue (14th, 4:22) won individual medals. Patrick Murtagh, Brendan Glynn, Ian Richter, and Thomas Lane all ran well. The Novice girls' second place team consisted of Katie Marquardt (3:57), Kelly Ward (4:24), and Emily Richter (4:47).
