Tears, Remembrances and Flowers
The fifth anniversary of the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 into the streets of Belle Harbor was commemorated on November 12 with the dedication of a new, $9.2 million memorial at the southern end of Beach 116 Street. The memorial wall, made of vermillion stone, is inscribed with the names of all of the 265 people who died in the crash. In addition, there are holes of various sizes in the wall, allowing visiting relatives and friends of the victims to see the sky and ocean. Family members used those spaces to leave flowers and personal mementos. After the Beach 116 Street ceremony, many of the family members went to the intersection of Beach 131 Street and Newport Avenue, the crash site.
