Autumn is definitely in the air as we approach Thanksgiving. Whatever you are doing for Thanksgiving Day-cooking a turkey dinner with all the trimmings for family, visiting relatives, going out to a restaurant, working or even just hanging out alone-have a wonderful day!

Christ Presbyterian Church will have a Spaghetti Dinner in the church hall on Sunday, November 19 at 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Dinner includes spaghetti, meatballs, a glass of wine, bread, cake and coffee. Dinner for adults costs $10 each; children cost $3 each. At the dinner there will be a drawing for $5000. Tickets for the drawing-only 200 will be sold-cost $50 each and can be gotten by calling Al at (718) 474-0534 or Janet at (718) 318-6454. All money raised will go toward repairing the church roof.

Get started on your Christmas shopping early! The Broad Channel Pre-K will be hosting a bus trip to the Tanger Outlet Mall on Saturday, November 18 at 7 a.m. Cost is $32 a person, which includes breakfast and a coupon book. Seats are limited.

An email came and this is what it said: The American Legion Auxiliary would like to thank all who attended their Brunch and supported the Sweepstakes to benefit the Children's Christmas Party. The event was a huge success and special thanks to All American Deli, the girls and guys who volunteered for community service as well as those who donated gifts for the sweepstakes.

Annie's Angels are starting their fundraising efforts to fight Cystic Fibrosis. The family of Annie, a little girl from the Rockaways who has CF, started "The PLUNGE", an annual sponsorship event to raise money for CF research. Several Annie's Angels members brave the icy mid-winter waters of the Rockaways in at the annual "PLUNGE." Sponsors, with monetary contributions, are sought and appreciated. We are currently selling $50 Superbowl boxes [with cash prizes awarded as such-Final Score wins $2,500, Halftime Score wins $1,000 and 1st and 3rd Quarters win $500 each]. Email or call to hold your favorite box. Also selling is the $5 Daily Raffle; chances cost $5 each. If your chance number matches the NYS evening number (must be straight) any day during the entire month of December you win-on weekends $50, weekdays $25, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve $100. Numbers 000 thru 999 are available-call or email with your number choice. There are also $10 50/50 boards with the winner receiving $500 in cash [boxes 1 thru 100 available...call early]. Snow Flake Bingo will be held in January of 2007. Items or gift baskets to be used for the raffle table will be gladly accepted.

On Saturday, November 18 from 9 a.m. to noon check out birds on the marsh and pond at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Hawks, geese, ducks and 'winter-hardy shorebirds' are the refuge dwellers that will be looked for-bring your binoculars. Register for this event; call (718) 318-4340.

The Broad Channel Crafters and the American Legion Auxiliary will be hosting the 18th Annual Craft Fair (formerly the SVS Craft Fair) on Friday, December 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, December 2 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Broad Channel American Legion Hall. Handmade crafts, cakes, cookies, etc., will be available. Purchased items can be personalized. We will gladly accept craft donation on Thursday or Friday night December 1 and December 2 at the American Legion Hall or you can contact any Auxiliary member for more information. All proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project.

From Post 1404 of the American Legion comes an annual drawing for $10,000 in prize money. Tickets are $100 each. First prize nets $5,000, while second prize is $3,000 and third prize gets $2,000. Drawing will take place at the adults' Christmas Party on Saturday, December 16, 2006. Only 200 tickets will be sold. The seller of top prize winning ticket will get $500. Donation (ticket cost) is tax deductible. All ticket buyers can attend the Christmas Party. Party starts at 8 p.m.

The American Legion Auxiliary will be holding their Annual Children's Christmas Party on Sunday, December 10 at 1 p.m. for children newborn up to grade 3. A magician will entertain the children and Santa will make a special appearance.

The last Civic Association meeting of 2006 will be held on Thursday, November 30. It will not be in December this year.

Leaves will be picked up by the DOS and turned into compost. Put them at the curb (DOS wants leaves in paper bags starting next year) on Saturday, November 18 after dinner. They will be collected. If you miss collection in November, the date to put leaves out next month is Saturday, December 2. If you don't have paper bags, put leaves only in a trashcan.
