Sun Beams Down On Surf-Fishing Tournament

By Kevin Brown

Who gets an 80 degree day in the middle of October? Answer: the 25 fisherman who attended this year's 12th Annual Surf-Fishing Tournament, which was dedicated to the memory of the "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin.

Once again, Judge George Murphy came to officiate along with son Paul, who came to participate. The Noreaster two days previously blew out the hopes of many fish being caught. That didn't stop everyone from trying especially Kevin Kelly, who won the "Most Persistent Award". The traditional game of horseshoes had to come out as soon as Bobby Regan- the official chef of the tournament- fed everyone lunch. Thanks Bob!

Also big thanks go out to Christine and Tom Healy Jr. for donating spirits, from Healy's Pub on Beach 108 Street and for hosting the awards ceremony. Our fine dining is courtesy of Tom and George from Curran's Superior Meats at Beach 129 Street. These fishermen are surely starting to get spoiled.

So like the birds of Capistrano, I know I'll be seeing all you guys next year. Same time and same place.
