Bishop Kearney Bounces Stella Maris From Soccer Playoffs

Stella Maris held their CHSAA soccer rivals Bishop Kearney scoreless for 60 minutes in their second round playoff matchup at the Verrazano Complex. The Lady Flippers had held off the relentless Tigers attack and as the late Monday afternoon sky began to darken, there was a possibility that overtime might take place.

Bishop Kearney looked frustrated as numerous scoring chances was swept away by Stella Maris' goalkeeper Melissa Peltz. In the 62nd minute of the second half, Jackie Martin received a pass from Tigers teammate and Breezy Point native Megan Fitzpatrick and was tripped up just outside of the goalkeeper's area. The referee's hands signaled a free kick and though the Flippers questioned the call, the Tigers got the first break of the match. Megan Fitzpatrick would calmly send the free kick past a diving Peltz and the Tigers were the beneficiaries of a goal which gave them a 2-1 victory and a berth to the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens championship. Unfortunately for Stella Maris, the penalty was a huge blow to their hopes of advancing to the championship. They had qualified for the semifinals after a nailbiting 1-0 quarterfinal victory last Friday against Christ the King at Fort Tilden. Nine minutes
