Diabetes Awareness Day This Saturday
A consortium of local Rockaway healthcare providers invites the public to Family Diabetes Awareness Day, which will be held on Saturday, November 11, at St. Rose of Lima Church, located at 130 Beach 84 Street, Rockaway Beach, NY, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..
Held during National Diabetes Education Week, the event is free of charge.
Family Diabetes Awareness Day includes talks given by diabetes experts, including doctors and nutritionists, and free up-to-date literature.
Topics of the talks will include: the prevalence of diabetes given by Joseph Edwards, American Diabetes Association; the ABCs of diabetes given by Obiora Anyoku, MD, St. John's Episcopal Hospital; a healthy cooking demonstration given by Stephanie Cordaro, RD; childhood diabetes by pediatric endocrinologist Ilene Fennoy, MD, Columbia University Diabetes Center of New York; eye disease and diabetes by ophthalmologist Richard Luck, DO; and "The Road to Healthy Kidneys" by Barbara Wrynn, CNN, Janet & John Raggio Nephrology Institute, North Shore LIJ Health System.
Health screenings for diabetes, blood pressure, foot disorders and vouchers for eyeglass screening will be offered free.
There will be door prizes, refreshments, and giveaways.
