Cop Spots Gun On Teenager

An armed teenager was arrested last Sunday night in Far Rockaway after a police officer spotted what appeared to be a gun protruding from the back of his jacket, according to court records.

Police Officer Douglas Rome of the 101 Precinct said he noticed "an L-shaped object" protruding from the back of 17-year-old Miguel Ortega's jacket when he was patrolling the area near Beach 25 Street and Rockaway Freeway on November 5.

Rome stopped Ortega, of 2956 Rockaway Freeway, and found an unloaded semi-automatic pistol tucked in the back of the teen's waistband. The serial number on the firearm was scratched off.

Ortega was arraigned November 6 on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, according to a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. Judge Suzanne Melendez set bail at $5,000 and return date of November 20.
