Stroke Screenings On November 21
Life Line Screening Radiology will be screening Rockaway residents for preventive measures against a stroke at the Elks Lodge #532, 1410 Beach Channel Drive on November 21. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m.
A stroke, also known as a "brain attack," is ranked as the third leading killer in the world, and the second among women. Through preventive screenings, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced.
Screenings are fast, painless and low cost, using ultrasound technology to scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries which can lead to a stroke, and aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta and hardening of the arteries in the legs, a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered for men and women is a bone density screening to assess their risk of osteoporosis.
"About half of the persons with significant carotid stenosis do not show any symptoms before they have a major stroke. The stroke itself is the first symptom. We cannot wait for symptoms to occur before we diagnose and treat," said Dr. J. Crayton Pruitt, M.D. F.A.C.S.
