Heavy Winds, Rain Rip Rockaway

A heavy storm hit Rockaway last Saturday morning, bringing damaging winds that knocked down many trees and electric wires throughout the peninsula. The beachfront suffered the most damage with high waves eroding the sand back to the boardwalk in many areas. At 9 a.m., all of the lights in the sprawling Ocean Bay Houses, from Beach 54 Street to Beach 58 Street, went out due to downed lines. The lights were restored by 1 p.m. and police say there were no incidents during that time.
