John W. Norton Jr., a lifelong Inwood resident, died October 22. He was 81.
Norton, whose nickname was "Butch," was a retired supervisor for the Nassau County Department of Public Works. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters on the U.S.S. Block Island. Norton was also a member of the Inwood Fire Department for 60 years, and was made a chief in 1954; a member of the Inwood VFW; and the Keystone Yacht Club in Woodmere.
Norton is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughter, Nancy Carrigan of Inwood; sons, John (Jean) of Merrick, Long Island, Warren (Janice) of Inwood, Joseph (Lori) of Freeport, Long Island and David (Cindy) of Woodmere; 13 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and brother, Robert of Georgia.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Meserole Funeral Home Inc. of Inwood, with a VFW service at the funeral home and fire department service at the Inwood Firehouse. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Inwood. Interment was at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, Long Island.
John D. O'Connor
John D. O'Connor, a Rockaway resident for 30 years, died October 15 in Hong Kong. He was 37.
He is survived by his wife, Sabrina; mother, Anna "Nancy"; father, William "Bill"; brother, William (Danielle); sisters, Ann Marie Morales (Carl) and Jennifer; and nieces and nephews, Casey, Amanda and Jake Morales and Liam O'Connor.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 28 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church in Belle Harbor. Interment will be held at St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx.
Edward T. Tasso
Edward T. Tasso, a Rockaway resident for two years coming from Bay Ridge, died October 19.
Tasso, a transportation manager, was born in Brooklyn.
He is survived by his wife, Elena Queirola Tasso; children, Michael P. Tasso, Karen Bruno, Lisa Tasso and Edward Joseph Tasso; and grandchildren, Michael Anthony, Nicholas, Lauren, Joseph, Emma and Watalya.
Funeral arrangements and visitation were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thomas More Church. Interment was at Ocean-View Cemetery in Staten Island.
Alice Traynor, a Rockaway resident for over 50 years, died October 22.
Traynor, a homemaker, was born in Leitrim County, Ireland.
She was preceded in death by her son, Brother Hubert Traynor, OSF; daughter, Alice Dreiss; and sister, Ann Hoban.
Traynor is survived by her daughters, Sister Alice Traynor, OSU and Patricia Allison; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
