Broad Channel Bits
The leaves are starting to change. They still are mostly on the branches, but some fall each day. Soon, a lot of folks will be raking up big piles of leaves. And, at one time in the past, the very distinct smell of burning leaves would fill the air on weekends. One thing hasn't changed though; children can still enjoy jumping in a pile of dry leaves and scattering them!
A Halloween Party at the VFW Post 260 at 705 Shad Creek Road will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cost for couples is $35 or $20 for singles. There will be food, beer, mixers and entertainment and prizes for best costumes. "Come out and party [with us] before the snow falls," says one of our neighbors!

Enjoy a Jamaica Bay History Tour on Sunday, October 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. A guided tour along the West Pond Trail will be led by a park ranger. Trekkers will have an open view of the bay and surrounding areas as they learn how people have affected and shaped the bay over time. Bring binoculars. The Broad Channel Pre-K will be hosting a bake sale on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29. It will be held after the 5:30 p.m. mass on Saturday night and after the masses on Sunday. All proceeds to go to the Broad Channel Pre-K.
The VFW is starting its brunches again; there will be a brunch on October 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On the menu is the following: choice of any style eggs, pancakes or waffles with bacon, ham or sausage. Adults cost $6 each and children are half price. See you at the VFW!
The Halloween Parade will be held on Sunday, October 29. Marchers will line up at 1 p.m. at the 17th Road Park. From there parade will proceed to the BCAC parking lot where every child will receive a cupcake, candy and juice. There will be a raffle for a 6-foot tall blow up Halloween decoration to help pay for the candy and juice. Christ Presbyterian Church will have a Spaghetti Dinner in the church hall on Sunday, November 19 at 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Dinner includes spaghetti, meatballs, a glass of wine, bread, cake and coffee will be served. Dinner for adults costs $10 each; children cost $3 each. At the dinner there will be a drawing for $5000. Tickets for the drawing-only 200 will be sold-cost $50 each and can be gotten by calling Al at (718) 474-0534 or Janet at (718) 318-6454. All money raised will go toward repairing the church roof.
From Post 1404 of the American Legion comes an annual drawing for $10,000 in prize money. Tickets are $100 each. First prize nets $5,000, while second prize is $3,000 and third prize gets $2,000. Drawing will take place at the adults' Christmas Party in December, 2006. Only 200 tickets will be sold. The seller of top prize winning ticket will get $500. Donation (ticket cost) is tax deductible. All ticket buyers are invited to the Christmas Party. Those planning to attend the party
are asked to call the Legion at (718) 474-5029 so the post can plan ample food.
St. Virgilius Golden Age will be running a bus ride to the Hilton Casino in Atlantic City on Wednesday, November 15. Cost is $29 per person, with coin return of $21 and $5 food coupon to apply to the buffet or Horizon's. Get started on your Christmas shopping early! The Broad Channel Pre-K will be hosting a bus trip to the Tanger Outlet Mall on Saturday, November 18 at 7 a.m. Cost is $32 a person, which includes breakfast and a coupon book. Seats are limited. If you are interested in Jamaica Bay, there is a day-long conference called "Jamaica Bay: Plight and Promise" to be held at Brooklyn College in Woody Tanger auditorium on Saturday, October 29 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Over one dozen presentations will be given by researchers; a question and answer period will follow each set of presentations. There is no cost for the conference, but lunch will be available for $5. Call Martha Duran at (718) 354-4530 to register. Mention lunch if you intend to buy it.
One of our neighbors doesn't know where to send Labels for Education. If any of the schools attended by Channel children uses them, please let me know. I'll pass the information on.
