This year's Rockaway Relay For Life was not only successful, it beat all expectations, according to John Link of the American Cancer Society and event chairperson Jeannine Stathis, who thanked team members and volunteers at a festive wrap-up dinner Tuesday night at the Beach Club.

"We collected $80,000; the best ever. We shattered expectations," Link said.

"We have a long way to go. Hopefully, cancer will be a thing of the past," Stathis said.

While planning has not yet begun for next year's event, which normally takes place at Beach Channel High School, Stathis said she hopes to get more teams, in addition to the almost 30 that took part in 2006.

"I have already gotten phone calls from people wanting to know how they can join teams next year," Stathis said.

The Relay for Life, an overnight event, is held nationally to raise money to eradicate cancer.

Link and Stathis present the team leaders of the Victoria's Secret team, Victoria Backus and Tracey Rogers, with a plaque for collecting the most money, $12,700, for this year's event.
