Peanut Shamrocks And Bethpage Battle To The Last Minute

By Mike Malsy

The BCAC Peanut Shamrocks traveled to Bethpage L.I. for a battle scheduled at high noon. Captain Steven Kenny won the coin toss and elected to receive the football. On Offense, starting QB Cameron Manzi started to bark out signals and the Shamrocks started their first drive.

Anthony Cimino ran for 8 yards, followed by nice runs by Charlie Bostwick and Patrick Minihane. The drive stalled and the Shamrock Defense came onto the field determined to stop the run. The defensive line of Charlie Bostwick, Bryan Bostwick, Michael Henglein, Liam Malsy, Danny Clark, Johnny Weiss, James Carson, and Shawn Cavanagh combined for a solid line which closed up many running lanes forcing the game to the outside.

LB's Steven Kenny, Patrick Minihane, Aiden Smith, and Matt Ostrander recorded several tackles. Leading the defense for a second week was Luke Hanning; Luke recorded 8 solo tackles and was in or near every defensive play controlling the Bethpage offense.

The 2 teams stalled on offense several times until Bethpage scored on a sweep with a few minutes left in the first quarter. The Shamrocks quickly responded by calling on their superb offensive line of Brian McNulty, Jake Murphy, Center Johnny Walsh, Charlie Bostwick and Matt Ostrander to open up some running lanes, Anthony Cimino took a handoff from Cameron Manzi and bolted 55 yards for his first TD of the season and tied the game 6-6. The defense then came onto the field and forced a 4 and out and headed into halftime tied 6-6.

The 2nd half started like the 1st half with both defenses forcing turnover on downs. Late in the 3rd Quarter, Bethpage scored on sweep taking a 12-6 lead. The Shamrocks responded by driving to Bethpage's 30 yard line with nice runs by Luke Hanning, Patrick Minihane, Matt Ostrander and Steven Kenny but stalled on a good defensive play by Bethpage. Late in the third quarter, a Bethpage RB broke a tackle and sprinted to the end zone but the Shamrock Defense led by Luke Hanning caught up to the RB and stopped them on the 10 yard line.

The Shamrock defense dug deep with their backs to the goal line and made 3 spectacular plays led by Charlie Bostwick (forcing a fumble) and Liam Malsy, Bryan Bostwick, James Carson, Daniel Clark, Michael Henglein, Johnny Walsh, Johnny Weiss and Aiden Smith to force a 4th and Goal from the 1 yard line. The coaches called a timeout to plan their strategy, Bethpage tried to run up the middle and all 8 of the Shamrocks clogged the middle to stop the play and force a turnover on downs.

The 4th Quarter started with the Shamrocks calling Charlie Bostwick's number, with nice runs setting up a 3rd and 2 from the 48 yard line, Charlie took a handoff and broke 2 tackles on his way to a 47 yard run to Bethpage's 5 yard line. Luke Hanning and Patrick Minihane got some tough yardage forcing a 4th and goal from the 2 yard line.

Then Johnny Walsh snapped the ball to QB Cameron Manzi who handed it off to Charlie Bostwick led by FB Anthony Cimino and lineman Brian McNulty, Jake Murphy ran a sweep to the right and scored with 1 minute left, it was Charlie Bostwick's 1st TD of the season and tied the score 12-12 ending the game. The Coach's would like to thank all the parents, friends and family who showed up again in great numbers to cheer our Shamrocks. We were the visiting team but we heard "Go Shamrocks" throughout the game. Our Shamrocks played their little hearts out and left the field with the biggest smiles on their faces. Parents should be proud of their performance. Go Shamrocks!!!!
