Major Drug Sweeps Bring 96 Arrests

Nearly 100 people - including a reputed gang leader and other gang members - have been charged in connection with two major narcotics sweeps at three housing complexes in Far Rockaway, authorities announced on Thursday.

The massive sweeps, which involved hundreds of undercover drug buys at the Ocean Bay Houses, Beach 41 Street Houses and Ocean Village, were conducted over an eight-month period beginning in February. Buys were also made in a "Drug Free School Zone," and, in one instance, a child was used to deliver the drugs.

Eighty-one people have been arrested and another 15 are being sought by authorities. The defendants, nearly half of them residents of the housing complexes, are charged with selling cocaine, crack, heroin and marijuana to undercovers, according to authorities. A list of the defendants' names appears at the end of this story.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, who announced the busts with Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown at One Police Plaza, said the combined effort between the NYPD and prosecutors "put a million dollar-a-year trade out of business."

The investigation, codenamed Operation Sandstorm and Operation Undertow, used electronic surveillance, searches, undercover officers and other investigative tactics to make more than 200 drug buys, and the seizure of about five kilograms of cocaine, packaging materials, thousands in cash and four guns, including a loaded tech-nine assault weapon.

A reputed Crips gang leader, Jamel "Murder" Hamilton, was arrested and charged with supplying other gang members with drugs, which they would then sell, and with keeping a stockpile inside an apartment at 409 Beach 51 Street. Police searched that apartment and recovered drugs and packaging materials.

Police arrested one of Hamilton's alleged workers, Christian Dent, on April 27, after Hamilton gave him the order to pick up eight ounces of cocaine, authorities said. Another alleged gang member, Kiseam Mathews, was arrested September 6, after he was ordered to pick up another eight ounces of coke from the Bronx.

Hamilton is charged with selling cocaine to an undercover officer on July 13 in the playground of PS 105 on Beach 51 Street. Authorities estimated that the group's operation took in $30,000 a week.

Other reputed Crips lieutenants True Womack and Bentley Martin are also charged with making deals to undercover officers. The investigation also led to the apprehension of alleged Crips member Michael Pledger, who was arrested in Georgia, where he fled after allegedly killing 16-year-old Kadeem Smalls in Far Rockaway.

The other defendants are charged with a variety of crimes related to the alleged activity.

"These arrests - and the seizure of drugs, guns and other contraband resulting from this investigation - should serve as a warning to both drug dealers and violent criminals alike that the law enforcement community - in spite of the diversion of significant resources to prevent terrorism and protect our city - will continue to aggressively track down those individuals who traffic in drugs and seek to put them prison for a long period of time," said Brown. "Not only were we able to arrest street dealers, but also the individuals who were allegedly running the operation. Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a violent street gang. These arrests will also take us a long way to improving the quality of life of the residents of Far Rockaway and in reducing gang-related violence and other criminal activity."

Kelly said the sweeps were a good collaborative effort that would have a positive impact on the housing complexes. "These arrests make the Rockaways safer by putting its drug dealers in jail. It represented great work by the Department's Narcotics and Gang Divisions as well as the prosecutors," he said.
