Ernesto Leaves Calling Cards From One End Of Peninsula To The Other

Tropical Storm Ernesto might not have been a Category Five Hurricane, but it left damage and failed electrical circuits in its wake as it moved over the Rockaway peninsula over the Labor Day weekend. Trees were felled, taking down electrical lines and many advertising signs were destroyed by the high winds. A large cross was blown from the steeple at St. Rose of Lima Church, All told, more than 1,500 Rockaway customers lost their power during the storm, with the largest number in West Lawrence and the Redfern Houses complex.
