Eighty Various LI Apprenticeships Available

New York State Labor Commissioner Linda Angello recently announced the opening of eighty new apprenticeships available through various locals.

Five carpenter apprenticeships will open through the Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee. Recruitment will be conducted from September 5, 2006 through February 27, 2007. Applications will be available, in person only, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at 270 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge. Applicants are required to be at least 17 years old; have a high school or general equivalency diploma, with a transcript required from the school; have lived for at least six months in Nassau or Suffolk County; have transportation to and from job sites and apprentice school; be physically able to do the work; pass a drug test at the committee's expense; and be willing to join the union, sign and comply with an indenture agreement, if accepted for the program. Fifteen skilled construction craft laborer apprenticeships will be available through the Laborers Local 1298 Joint Apprenticeship Training Fund. Recruitment will be conducted from September 6, 2006 through March 2, 2007. Applications will be available, in person only, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the local, 1611 Locust Avenue, Bohemia. Completed applications must be returned to the local within one week of receipt. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen; have a high school or general equivalency diploma, with a transcript or diploma required after acceptance to the program; live in Nassau or Suffolk County; have a valid driver's license or transportation to and from job sites and apprentice school; sign an affidavit attesting to their physical ability to do the work; and join the union, if accepted to the program. Twenty skilled construction craft laborer apprenticeships will also be available through the Joint Apprenticeship Committee for the General Building Laborers, Local 66. Recruitment will be conducted from September 5, 2006 through February 28, 2007. Applications will be available at the local and must be completed on the premises, 1600 Walt Whitman Road in Melville, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., every Monday and Wednesday. Applicants must be 18 years old; have a high school or general equivalency diploma; have lived in Nassau or Suffolk County for at least six months; have transportation to and from job sites and apprentice school; pass a written exam; and provide a notarized affidavit attesting to their physical ability to do the work. Forty electrician apprenticeships will be available through the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Recruitment will be conducted from September 6, 2006 through February 21, 2007. Applications can be obtained, in person only, at 370 Motor Parkway in Hauppauge, the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 10 a.m. to noon. Applicants must be 18 years old; have a high school or general equivalency diploma, with a passing grade in algebra, math I, or first year high school Regents math; have lived in Nassau or Suffolk County for at least one year prior to the application date; receive a qualifying score on the NJATC/AIR aptitude test; be interviewed by the committee; be physically able to do the work; and pass a substance abuse test, at the sponsor's expense, before final acceptance.
