Fontbonne Hall Aims To Spike 2006 Volleyball Competition
The 2006 Girls Catholic High School Sports Association (GCHSAA) volleyball season begins in mid-September. But preparations for the season are well underway. The Bonnies, of Fontbonne Hall Academy held tryouts last Wednesday August 23.
The coaches, Francine and Doug Fuerst worked out the returning upper class women, and the incoming freshmen for several hours in the Saint Patrick's gym. At the conclusion of the tryouts the following rosters were finalized.
The varsity consists of co-captains Julie Stewart, and Kristina Lundberg, along with returning seniors, Kerry Murdoch, Brittany Lynch, Janine Crivelli, and Rockaway residents, Alair Sheehan, Liz Lang, and Cailin Carley. They are joined by juniors Pam Mendoza, Liz Rogers, and Rockaway residents Kelly Johnston, and Jane Taikina, all who step up from last years JV.
The JV roster includes returning sophomores from Rockaway Maggie Sheehan, and April Shaughnessy, along with Katrina Aluotto, Gabrielle Coakley, Kristine DeMasi, Danielle Eaton, Cathy Koutsavlis, Kaitlyn Cortes, and Alessia Resta. They are joined by incoming freshmen Sarah McCarthy, Justina Johnson, Kara Egan, and Jackie Kennedy, all from Rockaway along with Karissa Beatty, and Maria Stavropoulos.
With the opening game of the season against arch rival Bishop Kearney set for September 19th, the coaching staff and players will be practicing daily to be ready. The Bonnies look forward to a very successful season and hope to build on last years Varsity finish of second place in the Brooklyn division, including an invitation for the Varsity, to the New York State B Championships. The JV finished first and undefeated in Brooklyn, while placing third overall at the Diocesan Championships.
Both teams are shaping up and the coaches have high hopes for the upcoming season. Stay tuned!
