First Annual St. John's Ocean Walk

The First Annual St. John's Ocean Walk to benefit the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at St. John's Episcopal Hospital is scheduled for Sunday, September 17.

Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the flagpole in front of the hospital, 327 Beach 19 Street in Far Rockaway. The two-mile walk, sponsored by Hunter Ambulance Inc. and Tate Medical Center, will start at 12 noon and proceed to the boardwalk until Beach 40 Street and then return to the hospital.

The walk will include giveaways and refreshments upon return. Walkers are asked to raise at least $100 in pledges.

Proceeds from the Ocean Walk will go towards upgrading the obstetrical unit at the hospital, which is the sole obstetrical service in the Rockaways. St. John's Nursery has 25 bassinets certified by the New York State Department of Health, and 1,030 babies were delivered in 2005. The hospital also provides care for high-risk infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. "It is not necessary to travel long distances to have a quality delivery," says Reva Oliner, Ocean Walk Chairperson. "St. John's serves our local community with a family-friendly birthing facility.

We are striving to make our neighborhood hospital your first choice."

St. John's Obstetrics/Gynecology Department also offers comprehensive women's healthcare services, including well women's care, inpatient hospital care and surgery. Last year, the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics/ Gynecology, Jerald Korman, MD, established a midwifery program to complement the hospital's staff of board-certified obstetricians. Dr. Korman was an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine before entering private practice in 1999.
