Addabbo Sponsors Pooch Sprinkler Bill
City Council Member Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. has announced that he has cosponsored legislation in the Council that would require the installation of fire sprinklers in establishments or facilities that provide services for animals.
In addition to pet shops the legislation would also cover veterinarian facilities, animal hospitals, animal kennels, animal pounds and animal grooming establishments.
Addabbo, a supporter of "Bobby and the Strays" animal rescue group, said that his concern for animals and the recent three alarm fire that badly damaged Bob's Tropical Pet Center in Woodhaven prompted him to join in sponsoring this legislation to safeguard animals in facilities housing pets.
Similar legislation that was introduced in the Council in 2004, supported by Addabbo, would have required sprinklers in facilities that provide services to animals and shelters that house them for more than 24 hours. But despite numerous sponsors it never made it to a Council hearing.
Addabbo said the current sprinkler legislation before the Council would also aid firefighters who are risking their lives in these fires running in to get the animals out.
The councilman pointed out that a sprinkler system would also provide valuable protection for those around the animal facility.
"It's really two-fold. You would be securing the safety of the store itself and the safety of the people around it."
