Reconstructive Surgery Blocks Vital Artery
Workers racing to finish the new Washington Mutual Bank on Beach 116 Street blocked off that vital shopping artery last week as a 60-foot-high crane lifted massive air conditioning units onto the new bank's roof. The new bank is scheduled to open in mid or late September, company officials say. Meanwhile, at least for a few hours, parking was reduced on the street and the number of southbound lanes were cut by half. With the impending start of construction on the new HBSC Bank where the Rockaway Sunset Diner now stands, the street will have five bank branches in a two-block area.
