Path Is No Safe Haven From Vehicles

National Park Service workers have been spotted driving on the Rockaway Gateway Greenway, a recreation path that runs through the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Broad Channel, even though motorized vehicles are specifically banned from the path, which is supposed to be a safe haven for bicyclists, inline skaters and pedestrians who want to avoid confrontations with motor vehicles. Brian Feeney, a spokesperson for the NPS, said vehicles would use the path to perform maintenance such as trash pickup. He said NPS workers would not use the path as a "forth lane" to Cross Bay Boulevard, but he did not say why the pickup seen here could not drive on the boulevard, with workers accessing the path on foot.
