Lovely Night For a Graybeard Family Boardwalk Run

By Keith "Bugsy" Goldberg

The clouds parted and the sun came shining in as a late afternoon downpour gave way to a beautiful night on Friday for the 4th Annual Graybeards Family Run. Almost 400 runners took part in the various races, and hundreds more lined Shore Front Parkway to cheer them on, before adjourning to the St. Camillus Schoolyard for the post-race festivities.

The Graybeards would like to welcome and thank our lead sponsor, The Benjamin Companies, co-developer of Arverne-by-the Sea.

The night began with the children's races giving a glimpse of the future. Already some of the past participants have graduated to the Mile and even the 5K. Rockaway's Special Olympians followed with a spirited sprint along Shorefront.

The Mile Race was next up and both of last year's champions defended their titles with John Cosgrove winning the Male division and Frances Amodeo the Female division.

The showcase 5 K Run completed the competition. James Hayden gave a preview of what Marist can expect when he begins his college career this fall. Hayden blazed to a 16:54 to reclaim the title he won in 2004. Ryan Woerner took second overall with Jim McVeigh third. Carol Farrell became our first 3 time champion with a 22:08 to once again hoist the Female Champion's plate. Corrine Howley was close behind as was third place Judy Aiken. The 12 and under contingent was strong once again with 13 runners breaking 25:00. The evening's festivities included plenty of hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages, raffle prizes donated by Footlocker and our local merchants, 50/50 raffle, and music by the Gray Riders.

Thanks to Peter Griffith, Louis Brust, and the NYPD, our hosts St. Camillus, our sponsors and donors, my fellow Graybeards and all our other volunteers, my race director Joe Featherston and our Graybeards do-it-all secretary Mary Ellen Olsen. Thanks especially to all our runners and supporters. The 5th Annual Graybeards Family Run will be Friday July 27, 2007 at St. Francis de Sales. Mark your calendars now and remember to register early. See you next year!
