Belford Graduates U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

Peter J. Belford, of Breezy Point, graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with the 202-member class of 2006.

On June 19, Belford joined guest speaker President George W. Bush at the Academy's 70th commencement ceremony.

Midshipman Belford was given a Third Mate merchant marine license, presented to him by the Academy's Vice Admiral Joseph D. Stewart. He was also commissioned as a U.S. Naval Reserve ensign and was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation.

Belford is the son of Chickie and the late Peter Belford. Congressman Anthony Weiner had nominated him to the Academy.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy trains young men and women across the nation for careers in the merchant marine and transportation industry. The Academy is operated by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and is located in Kings Point, New York.
