'Second Saturday' Planting At Gateway

Friends of Gateway (FoG) will hold their fourth and fifth Second Saturday events on Saturday, August 12 and Saturday, September 9, starting at 11:30 a.m., where volunteers will gather at the Gateway Greenhouse, Floyd Bennett Field, for a day of environmental service.

The second Saturday of each month is set aside for environmental programs at Gateway National Recreation Area.

Tasks include tree care, planting and caring for the grounds at the Gateway Greenhouse Education Center.

FoG's goal is to plant 1,000 trees and shrubs at Gateway over the next year.

After the day's work, ending at 3 p.m., FoG encourages volunteers to join in a potluck picnic in the park, bringing a dish to share.

The environmental projects are family friendly, with enough to do so that children and adults can be part of the program.

There are some FoG projects that require special skills, and people with a horticultural background, art, carpentry, plumbing or electrical skills are needed.

For more information, call Friends of Gateway at (212) 226-3126.
