'Old Timers' Celebrate 60 Years of Friendship

At least a half dozen self-described old-time Rockaway residents and their spouses - many of whom have known each other for more than 60 years - met at the Irish Circle on Friday, July 28, for a reunion luncheon where reminiscing and catching up were on the menu. Currently residing in New Jersey, Long Island and Rockaway, attendees included: John and Mary McEachern, Eugene and Nancy O'Brien, Charlie and Joan Marquardt, John "Goff" and Monica Hayden, John and Ruth O'Keefe, Jim and Sheila O'Connor, Bill Laffam and Joan Scripps, Ed Quinn, Buddy O'Shaughnessy, Jimmy Williams and Jack Daugherty.

The group consisted of three US Marines, two retired New York City detectives, six Rockaway lifeguards (including one chief lifeguard), three attorneys, an architect and one trade businessman. Exactly 60 years ago, several of these men represented the 100th Precinct playing baseball in the Police Athletic League's City Championship held at Yankee Stadium. The group consisted of three US Marines, two retired New York City detectives, six Rockaway lifeguards (including one chief lifeguard), three attorneys, an architect and one trade businessman.
