Photo by Doug Macleod The number of people who lost their lives as a result of the van crash on Cross Bay Boulevard July 12 has climbed to six. Jose Prieto, 56, a passenger in the van who survived the initial crash died at at an area hospital this week, The Wave learned at press time. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board, meanwhile, have wrapped up their on-scene probe into the fiery crash that killed five other people and left four others seriously injured, according to spokesperson Lauren Peduzzi. The federal investigators spent about a week interviewing witnesses, taking pictures, making diagrams, performing systems tests on the van and collecting engine data in what Peduzzi described as "an intensive information gathering exercise." The next steps, she said, will involve analysis of their findings and perhaps further investigation. The agency's accident brief should be available in about a year, Peduzzi said.
