RSA/NYCHA Youth Enjoy NYC/Las Vegas Friendship Games
By Greg Carter
This is part two of the New York City Housing Authority/Rockaway Sports AssociationLas Vegas Friendship Games of 2006. As stated part two will attempt to focus on the great citizens of and around the city of Las Vegas, (specifically those in Clark County).
The RSA/NYCHA, which consisted of will first give thanks to some of the professional personnel of Amtrak. Kevin Bate, really made the youth along with our staff always feel at home. Mr. Bate was with us from New Orleans to Benson, Arizona and is a truly stand-up person. Cheryl Linyear, (Amtrak, customer services New Orleans) handled our ticket reservations with tremendous professionalism and character, along with a great smile.
On our continued travel to Las Vegas, I know for a fact, (by the expressions on our youth faces as we drove through the Nevada desert) that our youth were in a wonderful awe of the environment.
They actually experienced the real deal as they saw cactus, desert, prairie-dogs, etc. Our Amtrak experience ended as we arrived in Las Vegas at the Circus-Circus Hotel. For those of you that are not familiar, it is a children friendly combination amusement, arcade and pool. The working force of the city of Las Vegas truly understands the advantages and benefits of the concept and I quote "the customer is our focus and usually always correct".
The Honorable Mayor of Las Vegas Oscar B. Goodman was as gracious a host and was very friendly when he met was the youth of the Rockaway Sports Association.
I would like to also Zelda Ellis of the Las Vegas Housing Authority. Mrs. Ellis was truly engaging regarding not only meeting with us but for possibly initiating a Las Vegas vs New York City Housing Authority Lacrosse competition. Thank you Mrs. Ellis for taking the time to meet our youth but for starting up the Las Vegas Lacrosse Go LVHA Lacrosse!!! Mayor Goodman along with Ricki Barlow, City Council liaison, invited our kids to a wonderful immigration and naturalization ceremony, it was truly amazing, especially for our youth.
The 2006 friendship games were truly based on our kids meeting people of other races, creeds, and colors. We received that and more with our newly acquired friends from Las Vegas. So many that I will admit I cannot place all names in this feature, but a one
Mr. Don Kruger along with his wife Liz, Ron Tillman, (regional rep Brine, and family made our trip the true meaning of the Friendship Games 2006.
From picking us up at circus-circus and escorting us to and from our games safely, they were great hosts and just nice people to our kids. I really want to mention all of the parents, friends and all of the staff of the Las Vegas youth Lacrosse program (Sgt, Robin, Chris, Peter) that attended all of our games and events. And I must say, the post game atmosphere was tremendous. So again, thank you Don and Liz and Now I realize you the wave readers are saying come on Coach Carter, how much more ???
Well I will hesitantly stop. I hope that you the Rockaway residents visit Las Vegas ASAP, and no I am not a paid Las Vegas Convention spokesperson. Remember, if visiting Las Vegas, go by and say hello to Mayor Oscar B. Goodman. You might be surprised when he comes right out and shakes your hand!!!! Thanks Las Vegas.
