Wounded Warriors Return To Rockaway

The Wounded Warriors, a group of soldiers severely injured in battle, returned to Rockaway last weekend for four days of activities including adaptive water-sports and nightlife. The Warriors received a heroes' welcome Thursday evening from community members who lined Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Neponsit to Beach 116 Street. The soldiers and their families, who stayed in the homes of local volunteer families, headed to the Rockaway Point Yacht Club Friday for adaptive waterskiing, fishing and sailing in Jamaica Bay. Others learned scuba diving in a 25,000-gallon pool on the beach. Friday night, the soldiers and their families were treated to a cruise of New York Harbor, and on Saturday night, they were the guests at the home of Rita and Flip Mullen on Beach 134 Street, where a block-party was held. The weekend wrapped up Sunday with a Mass at the September 11 memorial in Breezy Point. This was the second annual Wounded Warriors weekend sponsored by the Graybeards, a local not-for-profit organization.
