'Stomping Out Litter' At Public School 47

PS 47 Chris Galas School recently won the "Trashmasters! Team Up Clean Up" award from the New York Department of Sanitation at their annual Golden Apple Awards.

The school won the Queens and citywide division for their project, "XTreme Makeover, School Edition: School Facelift." Fifth, seventh and eighth grade students researched and tested soil outside the school, repainted a mural on the outside school wall, reworked the existing garden, and conducted an anti-litter campaign.

In addition to receiving a trophy, award certificate and check, the students and their teachers were surprised with an impromptu interactive percussion performance from Jason Mills, a cast member from the Broadway show Stomp, to go along with the theme of "stomping out litter."
