FDNY Pipe Band Takes Irish Honors

The New York City Fire Department Emerald Society Bagpipe Band made history in Ireland this week, when they came in 2nd Place in Grade Four of the All Ireland Bagpiping Championships, held in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. The band, which is composed of active or retired New York City firefighters, is the first American band in the 61 year history of the competition, to bring home a trophy from this prestigious event. The band competed against 17 other bands from throughout Ireland, many former champions, and were just a mere two points short of claiming the 1st place honor. The band is shown here accepting the Trophy from the Mayor of Letterkenny, and competition officials. The band has five residents of Rockaway among its members: Jack "Terry" Kelly and Joe Moore of Rockaway, and Band Chairman, Jim McEnaney, and Joe Duggan and John Henley, all of Breezy Point.
