'Grenade' Find Sparks Major PD, FD Response
New occupants of a home in Belle Harbor were trying to get settled in Monday night, but they found something that turned their home and the surrounding area completely upside down - a hand grenade.
The residents made the surprise discovery at about 7:30 p.m. and called police. The initial report of an explosive device sparked a major response by police and firefighters to the home at 131-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Homes in the area were evacuated and police kept people away as their investigation continued.
The device was collected by the NYDP's Bomb Squad, which later determined that it was an inert replica of a hand grenade, police said. There were no reported injuries.
The occupants of the home were not immediately available.
