'Puppets in the Park'Show Comes To The Rockaways
On Thursday, June 15, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance coordinated efforts with Partnerships for Parks to bring the children of the local Rockaway community to O'Donohue Park at Beach 16 Street and the boardwalk to see "Puppets in the Park," sponsored by the City Parks Foundation. The show was performed by the puppeteers from Central Park's Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, who arrived in a van equipped with assorted string puppets and staging for outdoor performances. The production titled, "The Princess, the Emperor and the Duckling" was based on three Hans Christian Anderson tales and was the first of a series of puppet shows that are traveling through the boroughs of New York City. This is the first time the marionette theatre came to Far Rockaway. Leroy Temple from the Parks Dept. was quoted as saying, "The response to the show tells you there is definitely a demand and need for these types of events and the Parks Dept. is planning to host concerts and cultural events in this area again soon. The puppet show was a great start and will definitely pave the way for more activities in the future."
