Free Adult English Classes

People who want to learn how to read, write, speak English or improve their language skills now have a place - right on the peninsula - to accomplish their goals.

The Peninsula Adult Learning Center, located at the Peninsula branch of the Queens Library, offers free literacy and English instruction as well as Adult Basic Education to anyone 16 years or older, according to spokesperson Barbara B. Miller.

The center has literacy and English conversation tutors, one-on-one mentors, a technology lab, and extensive book and multimedia collections. The ALC is designed to help people with building or improving one's reading, writing, or conversation skills. Workshops are also conducted at museums, exhibits, and special events in all five boroughs.

In addition, the ALC serves students who need counseling, training, and enrichment activities, and provides volunteer and career-building opportunities.

"Coming here is just a starting point to turning my life around," said student Molly C.

The Peninsula branch is located at 92-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Classes and tutoring groups are held on Mondays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays 1 p.m. - 6 p.m., and Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. The self-study program and one-on-one mentor assistance program runs on Mondays and Thursdays 1 p.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesdays 1 p.m. - 6 p.m., and Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
