6,100.00 to PS 183 in Rockaway Beach to assist in renewing the music department at the school.

"Last year, during my visit to PS 183 I was impressed with the musically talented students. When I was told that they were in dire need of musical instruments, I then made a promise that if the children and parents were able to take the initiative and raise funds for this mission, I would match their funding," Congressman Meeks said in making the presentation. "Today, I am pleased and proud to present a check for $5,100 to PS 183 and the great students and parent who make this possible."

Congressman Meeks, a former elementary and Junior High School band member was able to further enhance his fund raising efforts for students of PS 183 with an additional $1,000 donation from music mogul and Queens native Russell Simmons.

In partnership with the Rockaway Music and Arts Council, approximately 120 children in grades three through seven participate in PS 183's after school band brass band. During the day students are involved in a music memory program, which exposes them to both classical and contemporary pieces, its composers as well as notes and style of music.

"We are very excited about today's check presentations. Both Representative Meeks' and Russell Simmons' contribution of a total of $6,100 will help us expand the music program and offer music to more of our students," stated Margaret McAuley, PS 183 Assistant Principal.

PS 183 Parent Coordinator Jackie Stillwell, students, teachers, parents and members of the administration were delighted that Congressman Meeks was able to deliver to such a worthy program.
