Basketball Fundraiser Assists Jazzy Sports

A well-played and intense basketball fundraiser held late last month at Inwood Terrace Gardens Park was a welcome relief to a program that has benefited the Rockaway community for 30 years. The Jazzy Rockers 100-85 victory over the Al Perry All Stars in the first annual JMI Securities Sports Invitational raised funds for Jazzy Sports Inc., an organization which has implemented recreational programs in Far Rockaway since 1976.

A balanced attack was the key to victory for the Jazzy Rockers, who were led by Rodney "Hot Rod" Wapples with 27 points and Kevin Buie with 25 points. The Al Perry All Stars, named after a former longtime resident of the Rockaways and a sponsor, were led by Antoine Harris' 24 points. Rookie newcomer Elijah Worrell chipped in six points for the Perry All Stars.

Founder Jeffrey "Jazz" Moye said that the basketball game could have not have gotten off the ground without Al Perry's help and support.

In the summertime, basketball rules the playgrounds and Jazzy Sports form various traveling teams in citywide tournaments throughout the summer. In August, a 3 on 3 unlimited tournament, which will feature participants 18 years or older, will be held by the organization. The cost is $100 as four players per team can register.
