Bishop Kearney HS Scholars Hail From Rockaway

Seventeen young women who live on the Rockaway peninsula were among two hundred sixty-three Bishop Kearney High School seniors who graduated on June 3, 2006. Ten of them were among the one hundred seventy graduates (65% of the class) who received over five hundred scholarships, valued at more than thirteen million dollars.

Jillian Brady won the St. Vincent de Paul Award to the College of Mount St. Vincent, NY and the Iona Scholarship to Iona College, NY. She will attend the College of Mt. St. Vincent.

Courtney Donahue won the Parish Scholarship and the University Scholarship to Catholic University of America, DC; the Loyola Scholarship to Fordham University, NY; the Academic Excellence Scholarship to Iona College, NY; the Presidential Scholarship to Manhattan College, NY; the Ignatius Academic Distinction Scholarship to Marquette University WI; the Providence College Award to Providence College, RI; the Presidential scholarship to Sienna College, NY and the University Honors Scholarship to SUNY @ Albany. She plans to attend SUNY @ Albany in the fall.

Ashley Fallon received the Department of the Army - ROTC - 4-year full scholarship and the Northeastern Excellence Scholarship to Northeastern University MA; the Presidential Scholarship to Fairfield University, CT; the Dean Scholarship to Le Moyne College, NY and the Presidential Scholarship to Loyola College, MD. She will attend Loyola, MD

Kaitlyn French received the St. Benedict Scholarship to Belmont Abbey, NC; the Parish Scholarship and the CUA scholarship to Catholic University of America, DC. She will attend San Diego State University, CA

Kristi Horgan received the Abbey Opportunity Award to Belmont Abbey, NC and will attend SUNY @ Cobleskill in the fall.

Nora Howard received the Jogues Scholarship to Fordham University, NY; the Marist College Scholarship to Marist College, NY; the Providence College Award to Providence College, RI; the Presidential Scholarship to St. Joseph's University, PA; the Presidential Scholarship to Sienna College, NY and the Graduate Program for Exceptional Students Scholarship to SUNY @ Albany. In the fall, she will attend St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

Corinne Howley received the Presidential Scholarship to Manhattan College, NY; the Freshman Academic Excellence Scholarship to Marymount Manhattan College, NY and the Loyola Scholarship to Fordham University, NY. She will attend Fordham University.

Caitlin Hynes won the Parish Scholarship and the University Scholarship to Catholic University of America, DC; the Semifinalist Scholarship to Fordham University, NY; the Knights of Columbus F. P. Matthews & J. E. Swift Educational Trust Scholarship; a finalist and recipient in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation; the Presidential Recognition Scholarship to SUNY @ Stony Brook; the N.Y.C.U.F.O.A. Bravest Scholarship Fund - Capt. "Hans" Meister Scholarship; the State Education Department - Scholarship for Academic Excellence; the Villanova Scholarship to Villanova University, PA and the Founder's Scholarship to Wagner College, NY. She will attend Fordham University in the fall.

Sheila O'Rourke won the Achievement Scholarship to St. Joseph's University, PA and the WVU Blue & Gold Level 2 Scholarship to West Virginia University, WV. She plans to attend Siena College, NY

Keara Savage received the Partners in Occupational Therapy Academic Scholarship to College Misericordia, PA; the Dean's Scholarship to Elizabethtown College, PA; the Dean's Scholar to Ithaca College, NY; the University Academic Scholarship to Quinnipiac University, CT; the Trustee Scholars Scholarship to Sacred Heart University, CT; the Assisi Scholarship to St. Francis University, PA; the WVU Blue & Gold Level 2 Scholarship to West Virginia University, WV; the Loyola Scholarship to University of Scranton, PA; and the President's Scholarship to Utica College, NY. She plans to attend SUNY @ Buffalo.

Among the other graduates are: Ashley Dady, who will attend Kingsborough Community College; Karen D'Ambrosi, who will attend SUNY @ Oneonta; Christina Kirk, who will attend SUNY @ Nassau Community College; Katie Peterson, who is going to CW Post; Marisa Rudolph, who will be attending Iona College; Morgan Shannon , who is attending Florida State University and Juliann Ulrich, who plans to attend St. John's University.

In reviewing the accomplishments of the Class of 2006, Sister Thomasine, Kearney's principal, noted: "We are very proud of the scholastic accomplishments of this class. These young women have worked very hard, focused on their college goals and achieved their personal best." Sister Margaret Ruddy CSJ, senior guidance counselor, supported the girls to insure their success in achieving recognition for their academic achievements. The large number and variety of scholarships awarded to these graduates testify to their ability and earnest dedication to their studies. These strong young women are certainly going to make a difference in the 21st century."

Bishop Kearney High School is a private Catholic secondary school owned and operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph and staffed by both religious and lay people in a co-operative effort to educate young women of Brooklyn, since 1961.
