75 Foot High Cell Tower Appears Overnight

Residents who live around Snug Harbour restaurant on Beach 108 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard were surprised on Sunday to see a 75-foot tower rising over the restaurant's parking lot. There was some conjecture about the use of the tower until workmen put the finishing touches on Monday morning and it was clear that the instant Rockaway landmark was a cell phone tower. A number of people called The Wave on Monday to complain about both the look and scale of the metal tower. Others complained that there is allegedly some evidence that the radiation from the towers may be dangerous, especially in light of the fact that the restaurant's location is only a block away from Public School 225. Community Board 14 District Manager Jonathan Gaska told The Wave on Thursday morning that he could find no city permits that would have allowed the restaurant's owner to build the cell tower at that location. Frank Gallagher, the owner of Snug Harbour, was unavailable for comment.
