MTA: New Buses For Local Routes By End Of Summer

On a day with 80-degree temperature, a Q22 bus driver had to be content with non-working air conditioning and a non-working fare box on Wednesday. Despite the MTA takeover of the private buses - including Green Bus, Triboro Bus and Jamaica Bus - which was completed on February 20 of this year, not all the old buses that ran on those private lines have been replaced as yet. The Wave was told that passengers would begin seeing new buses when delivery begins in July or August. "We purchased 284 buses for local routes," said MTA spokesperson Mercedes Padilla. "We will put the new buses on the road as soon as we get them." Padilla said all the new local buses should be on the road by the first quarter of 2007. The MTA also bought 317 new express buses. "Two hundred were put in service in 2005, and the rest will go on the road this " Padilla explained. Photo by Miriam Rosenberg
