A 19-year-old Hammels man was shot two times in the back last Saturday afternoon as he walked on the grounds of the development, police said.

Officers found Hammels resident Ronnie Smalls with two gunshot wounds in his back at about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, after receiving a report of shots fired.

According to official sources, Smalls was "uncooperative" with detectives, and told them that somebody fired the rounds at him from behind, but he did not see who shot him.

An anonymous witness who saw the incident from her apartment window, however, told police that she saw a male with a handgun flee the scene in a two-door sedan driving towards the beachfront.

Police immediately broadcast the description, but the unknown shooter remains at large at press time.

A canvas of the area revealed two shell casings in front of 81-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, police say. Smalls was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was treated for wounds that are not life threatening and is listed in stable condition, according to a source.

A large crowd surrounds Smalls after he was shot. Police say he was "uncooperative" with investigators.A large crowd surrounds Smalls after he was shot. Police say he was "uncooperative" with investigators. The shooting is being investigated by the 100 Precinct Detective Squad in Rockaway Beach.
